Black Knights draw Texas Tech in Lubbock Regional

Army baseball finds itself in a familiar position on the road to Omaha and the NCAA Division I championship.

The Black Knights were revealed as the fourth seed in the four-team Lubbock (Texas) Regional during ESPN’s selection show Monday. Army (28-23) will open the regional against host and top seed Texas Texas (36-15) at noon Friday at Dan Law Field on ESPNU.

It’s the second straight time that three-time defending Patriot League champion Army is being sent to Lubbock for regional play. Texas Tech, then ranked No. 8, defeated Army 11-2 in the 2019 regional opener.

Anthony LoRicco, Army’s top starter in 2021, pitched 1.2 innings of shutout relief in that game. Anthony Giachin, Andre Walden, Jeremiah Adams, Tim Simoes and Cam Cerruto were in the starting lineup against the Red Raiders. Giachin, a senior third baseman, is hitting .305 with a team-high 20 extra-base hits, including three home runs, and 32 RBI.

Army is seeking its first NCAA regional win since a 5-1 victory over North Carolina State in 2018.

UCLA (35-18), the No. 2 seed, and No. 3 seed North Carolina (27-25) will play in the other opening game of the double-elimination Lubbock regional at 7 p.m. Friday.
