Yonkers firefighter, 9/11 first responder to lead Army out for home opener

Yonkers Fire Department lieutenant and 9/11 first responder Steve Trizano will lead the Army football to the field for its home opener Saturday.

Army will play Western Kentucky on the 20th anniversary of the attacks on the Twin Towers in New York in what is expected to be an emotional afternoon.

“It’s a great opportunity for our players to connect with someone who was there,” Army coach Jeff Monken said during his Thursday press conference.

Monken said that Trizano will address the team Thursday and talk about his experiences at Ground Zero on Sept. 11, 2001.

“He will be with us on Saturday and lead us onto the field,” Monken said. “We just feel like that’s going to be really special for our team to be able to join him. I’m hopeful that is going to be a special opportunity and something that he’ll feel honored by. He’s should. He’s an American hero and we certainly feel that way. We are excited to have him come in today and talk to the team and excited to have him join us on Saturday.”
