Offense breakdown: Navy

Photo by Margaret Kite/Black Knight Nation

The mystery as to what formation Army would deploy against Navy was revealed when quarterback Bryson Daily lined up in shotgun on the offense’s first play.

How Army would call plays from shotgun was somewhat surprising. The Black Knights have generally tried to give Navy’s defense a different look every December. The 124th edition of the service academy rivalry was no different.

Army would run 17 of its 61 plays with Daily in an empty backfield. Daily motioned H-back Tyson Riley to block inside on many of those empty backfield plays. The Black Knights also ran three plays from a wildcat formation with Kanye Udoh taking two snaps (14 and 10-yard runs respectively) and Jakobi Buchanan one snap (five yards). Army called just one play from under center.

Daily and offensive lineman Shayne Buckingham, Connor Finucane, Lucas Scott and Brady Small played all 61 snaps in the 17-11 victory.

Possessions: 11. Touchdowns – 1.  Turnovers – 0. Punts – 7. Three-and-outs – 4 (3 straight in the fourth quarter). Drives of 7 or more plays – 5 (TD, FG, downs, 2 punts). Longest drive – 12 plays, 65 yards, 7:13, first quarter, touchdown

Third-down conversions: 5-for-14. Fourth-down conversions: 1-for-2

Average starting field position: Army 30 Best start: Navy 45.

Touchdowns (1): Tyson Riley, 4-yard TD catch from Bryson Daily, 3rd of season

20+-yard plays: 0

Negative-yardage plays: 2. Bryson Daily (- 4 yard run, – 1 yard sack, safety)

Penalties: 5. Connor Finucane (three false starts), Lucas Scott (false start); Josh Lingenfelter (false start)

Would love to see individual passing targets, drops, yards after catch for the Navy game and the season.
