Top freshmen Roberts, Benson transferring after coaching change

Patriot League rookie of the year Ethan Roberts and the Black Knights’ top 3-point shooter Coleton Benson are entering the transfer portal.

Army’s freshmen announced their decision Friday following the firing of coach Jimmy Allen earlier this week.

Benson cited “the unexpected coaching change and unforeseen future of the coaching staff,” for his decision.

Roberts thanked Allen and the rest of his staff, “for taking a chance on me and developing me personally and as a player every day. I am proud to say I played Army basketball.”

Both, Roberts and Benson, who played at Army Prep, started 31 of Army’s 33 games. Roberts was second on the team in scoring (12.6 points per game), rebounds (4.4), 3-pointers (59) and free throws made (78).

Benson topped the Black Knights with 72 3-pointers and was third in scoring (11.6). He averaged 20 points in Army’s two Patriot League tournament games.

Army Prep 6-foot-8 forward Ryan Renfro announced Monday that he will no longer be attending Army and reopened his recruitment.
