QB Champ Harris, LB Tano Letuli enter transfer portal

Two of Army’s brightest and best younger players announced Thursday that they are entering the transfer portal.

Quarterback Champ Harris, a true freshman who started games against LSU and UMass, and freshman linebacker Tano Letuli are leaving West Point after one season with significant contributions. Both Harris and Letuli have three years of eligibility remaining.

Harris, who was Army’s No. 2 quarterback throughout his freshman year behind junior Bryson Daily, played in six games, completing 19-of-35 passes for 260 yards with four interceptions. Harris’ 36-yard run against Holy Cross was the second longest touchdown run by the Black Knights this season.

Perhaps Army’s best passing quarterback, Harris was brought into a few games in one-minute situations to specifically throw the ball. His last snap for Army came on an interception on the final snap of the first half in a 28-21 win over Coastal Carolina on Nov. 18. Harris led St. Thomas Aquinas (Fla.) to a state title his senior season in 2022.

Letuli, who made 12 tackles in nine games for Army, was listed as MVP Kalib Fortner’s backup for the Army-Navy game. He was one of the few freshmen defensive players to make Army’s opening-day travel squad. Letuli, who played for Army Prep in 2022, took 20 defensive snaps against Boston College and 17 against Troy.

“I am forever grateful for my brothers and relationship that I have built while being here,” Letuli wrote in a social media post. “Thank you to the West Point community for giving me the opportunity to grow as a person and a football player within this program.

“Thank you to coach Juice (Weaver), coach Saturnio and the rest of the staff for believing in me and developing me.”

A standout at Cathedral Catholic High School in San Diego, Calif., Letuli chose Army over offers from Hawaii, Nevada and New Mexico.
