Army’s quarterback depth chart was dealt a blow earlier this week.

Senior Alex Meredith sustained a season-ending lower leg injury during practice Monday. Meredith was running second string behind junior Bryson Daily in preseason camp.

Coach Jeff Monken confirmed Saturday that Meredith will be out for the season, ending his on-the-field career.

“A great kid,” Monken said. “He was battling really with a chance to be the starter. We are disappointed to see him go. He’s already had a procedure. We are getting him healthy and getting him ready to be commissioned as an Army officer.”

Meredith was the top quarterback at Army Prep in 2019. He chose to focus on the academic and military side of West Point his freshman and sophomore years, leaving football. Meredith returned last fall and worked with Army’s scout team before switching to wide receiver in the flexbone scheme late in the season. He talked about how Army’s new shotgun scheme was a better fit for him and his skills last week during a media session.

“To battle back and be where he was in the position there, that’s the hardest thing for me to see and for him to accept that his career is done,” Monken said. ” We’ll give him a job to do with the team. He will still contribute. Right now, he’s really down in the dumps as anybody would be. He’ll spring back and he’ll get excited about that role and helping out the team anywhere he can.”

Meredith attended practices on crutches Tuesday, the day after his injury, supporting his teammates. He had surgery mid-week. Meredith’s injury leaves Army without a senior quarterback. Daily was the first quarterback on the field for Saturday’s scrimmage followed by sophomore Dewayne Coleman and freshmen Champ Harris and Larry Robinson taking practice snaps.
