Recruiting: Colorado OL Everett Capehart follows family’s Army path

Everett Capehart always wanted to serve his country, growing up in an Army family.

Capehart’s father, Sean, a current major, and his grandfather, Art, a retired major, became Signal Corps officers through Officers Candidate School.

Capehart wanted to follow a similar path with West Point as his dream school. But, Capehart wasn’t sure he would ever get the chance to attend the academy.

That all changed when Army offered Capehart, an offensive lineman from Ponderosa (Colo.) High, in March. Capehart’s unofficial Army visit was a recruiting game-changer in April.

“I was drawn to the program immediately,” said Capehart, who announced his commitment to Army last week. “Coach (Jeff) Monken runs an excellent program and I felt a strong connection to coach (John) Holt and coach (Cheston) Blackshear. They collectively made the decision to commit really easy.”

Capehart will be the first member of his family to attend West Point. He picked Army over offers from service-academy rivals Navy and Air Force.

“West Point separated itself early on by setting a high bar of what a top-tier football program looked like,” Capeharr said. “In my opinion, Air Force and Navy just weren’t able to reach the bar set by West Point.

“I found the facilities at West Point to be comparable to Power Four and the culture was great.”
