Recruiting: Virginia RB Dillan Wickham chooses Army

Dillan Wickham produced some impressive stats running the football last fall.

Wickham rushed for 1,641 yards and 13 touchdowns for West Springfield (Va.) High School. The numbers don’t tell the whole story about Wickham’s future. He wants more than a successful college football career. Wickham wants to be a part of something bigger than himself.

And, Wickham knew all along exactly where he could that balance. Wickham’s West Point interest was inspired by his father, Henry, who served 16 years in the Army.

Once Army coaches started recruiting, it became a no-brainer where Wickham would play college football. Wickham recently announced his commitment to Army.

“My dad is in the Army so it has always been a huge part of my life,” Wickham said. “I’m proud to be able to follow in his footsteps. After talking to coach (Aaron) Smith and coach (Jeff) Monken, I knew it was the type of environment I’ve been looking for, somewhere I can grow as a football player and a person.”

Army was Wickham’s first FBS offer. He and his family annually watch the Army-Navy game. Now, Wickham will have to chance to play in one of college football’s best rivalries.

“It felt amazing to officially commit to be a part of the team,” Wickham said, who plans on visiting Army in the near future. “I’ve felt like it was for me since I got the offer but making it official made it feels real.

“I love the triple option and the toss they’re two of my favorite plays so I’m excited.”
