Former Army safety and 2021 team captain Cedrick Cunningham is expected to join the Black Knights’ coaching staff this week.

Cunningham will switch sides of the ball as an assistant running backs coach.

A three-year starter, Cunningham recorded 188 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions in his Army career. Cunningham made 13 tackles in Army’s 2021 Armed Forces Bowl win over Missouri in his final college game. He played in 47 games for the Black Knights from 2018-21. Cunningham was invited to Indianapolis Colts rookie minicamp after his senior season.

Cunningham was an all-state running back at North Central (S.C.) High School. He will work alongside running back coaches Chandler Burks and Dane Romero. Cunningham will play an important role, providing perspective as a former Army player. He will be the only assistant coach that has previously played for Army. Offensive line coach Mike Viti was hired by Miami (Fla.) earlier this year.
