Recruiting: S.C. lineman Brooks Abernethy picks Army

Brooks Abernethy heard coach Jeff Monken talk about the opportunities after playing Army football during his spring game visit.

Offensive line coaches Cheston Blackshear and John Holt and recruiting coach Scot Sloan increased the Daniel (S.C.) center’s interest in the program.

Before Abernethy left West Point Friday, he committed to Army, joining its 2027 recruiting class.

“Coaches Sloan, Blackshear, and Holt really pulled me in,” said Abernethy, who is 6-foot-2 and 265 pounds. “They explained everything and made me see how special the program and the Brotherhood is. It just felt right.

“(Everything) also lines up perfectly with my faith and my relationship with God, which made the decision even clearer for me.”

Abernethy said his personality and skill fit Army’s culture and his position.

“I am willing to go to war for my brothers and I will give my all for them,” Abernethy said. “I am going to dominate in everything I do. I had a few other schools in the mix but I have never seen anything like the Army football program.”

Abernathy’s Army recruited moved fast. He was offered by Sloan on April 10, a week before his commitment.

Army was the offer that Abernethy was waiting on.

“I’ve always had the desire to join the Army since I was little,” said Abernethy, whose great grandparents were in the Army. “ So, it works out perfect.

“I was probably around 12 years old (when he started to be interested). I was inspired by all of my relatives that have served and my love for our great country.”

Abernethy didn’t have much exposure to Army football, living in the South other than the Army-Navy game. His West Point visit certainly gave Abernethy more perspective.

“I had no prior knowledge of the program (before recruiting),” Abernethy said. “Since being up there, I cannot imagine myself anywhere else.”
