Army’s Matt Drinkall named Central Michigan head coach

Army offensive line coach Matt Drinkall is Central Michigan’s new head coach.

Drinkall’s hiring was announced by the Mid-American Conference school Monday morning.

Drinkall is finishing up his 9sixth season at West Point. He’s coached Army’s offensive line the past two seasons and guided the Black Knights’ tight ends from 2020-22.

Army’s offensive line is one of three finalists for the Joe Moore Award, given the nation’s best line, and a major reason for the Black Knights 11-1 season under Drinkall’s watch along with assistant head coach Mike Viti. Army leads the nation in rushing with 314.4 yards per game.

Drinkall joined Army’s staff as an offensive quality control coach in 2019 following five seasons as head coach at NAIA Kansas Wesleyan and 42-17 record. He’s considered one of the nation’s innovated option minds.

Central Michigan will formally introduced Drinkall as its head coach at a welcome event at noon Tuesday. At the time of this writing, Drinkall plans to coach in the Army-Navy game Saturday.
