Army to play Marshall in Independence Bowl

Anticipation for the announcement of Army’s bowl game and opponent will building throughout Sunday afternoon.

North Carolina and Oklahoma were among the teams mentioned as potential opponents by bowl predictors.

When the dust settled, Army, the American Athletic Conference champion who has tied an academy record with 11 wins, will play Sun Belt champion Marshall in the Independence Bowl Saturday Dec. 28 in Shreveport, La.

Kickoff is 9:15 p.m. Eastern.

The conference champion vs. conference champion matchup is a bit overwhelming even with Marshall’s 10-3 season. AAC teams that finished below Army in the standings are playing Power Four teams – Navy vs. Oklahoma (Armed Forces Bowl), Tulane vs. Florida (Gasparilla Bowl), Memphis vs. West Virginia (Frisco Bowl) and East Carolina vs. North Carolina State (Military Bowl).

Independence Bowl representatives had visited Michie Stadium for at least three home games, including the AAC championship. Black Knight Nation could not confirm but were told at least one other bowl was interested Army.

Army will play Marshall without its head coach Charles Huff, who did not have his contract renewed. Huff was introduced as Southern Mississippi’s new head coach today. Marshall has agreed to terms with North Carolina State defensive coordinator Tony Gipson as its new coach.

Marshall quarterback Braylon Braxton is entering the transfer portal. Braxton was the Sun Belt newcomer of the year and the MVP of conference championship.

What a dispappointment for these young men–who worked so hard and played their hearts out–to draw an unranked Power 5 school for their bowl game. This is not a reward for them–it’s a gross insult. I’m ashamed of USMA decision makers who agreed to this matchup.

Army is getting screwed here…bad. But keep in mind that this doesn’t happen without USMA agreeing to it. They should have held the line.

I think we need to look at this as a set up for the future. Once of the reasons Boise State was ahead of Army in the polls all year, was because they started ahead of them. I can’t help but imagine where Army would have started, and finished, if they had used the offense they used the second half of the season. Imagine if Army finishes just 9-3 last year, Daily runs and scores 75% of his 2024 production. True, the ND game basically eliminated them from the CFP, but our only shot is being a top 5 conference champ. If we blow out the sunbelt champs, that gives us a leg up on the Group of 5. I don’t think it is unreasonable to expect Army to be the favorite to get that 5th championship spot next year.
