Lucas Fickel can’t wait to watch Army’s Black Gold game Friday night.
The last time that Fickel visited the Michie Stadium it was covered in snow from a major winter storm during his visit in January.
This time when Fickel visits West Point, the 2,000-yard Ohio running back will be an Army commit.
Fickel originally committed to Yale in February. His path changed. Army was at the top of Fickel’s recruiting and running backs coach Chandler Burks honored the Black Knights’ offer. Fickel signed his certificate of commitment Wednesday after committing to Army in late March.
“It’s all part of my story and I’m right where I’m supposed to be,” said Fickel, who will be one of the many 2026 Army commits in attendance for the spring game. “The (Army) staff has been awesome helping me get things to the finish line.
Fickel helped Olentangy Orange to undefeated 15-0 season and a state championship as a senior. The 6-foot, 210-pound Mr. Ohio Football nominee rushed for 2,074 yards and 31 touchdowns and added two receiving TDs.
“Part of what made our state championship team so great this year was the bond with my teammates,” said Fickel, who was also offered by Navy. “Army being a great program in general, but the brotherhood concept is very exciting for me. I think that’s what makes a good team great.”
Army is recruiting Fickel to play B-back. Fickel brings power and speed to Army’s backfield and coachability.
“I know that I have a lot of work to do,” Fickel said. “ I’m only 17 ( he should be a junior) so looking forward to working with top-notch coaches and trainers.
“Army always has a talented offensive line, so I’m excited to get my hands on the playbook and see how I can help. I definitely love contact, but also love running away from defensive backs.”
Fickel, who played travel ice hockey until three years ago, also competes in track. He plans on studying cyber security at West Point and enjoys building computers.
