Recruiting: Texas DB Caden Ward connects, commits to Army

Caden Ward’s defensive skills and versatility attracted the attention of both Army and Navy.

Ward received an offer from Army and assistant coach Cheston Blackshear on March 13 after three weeks before Navy extended the opportunity to play FBS football.

Army was quicker to offer and invite Ward a chance to visit its service academy. Ward’s April 6 Junior Day visit put things in perspective for Ward.

The LaMarque (Texas) defensive back followed Army’s 12-2 season and American Athletic Conference championship in its first season in the league last fall. Now, Ward could picture himself playing for the Black Knights.

One week after his visit, Ward called Army with his verbal commitment.

”What helped me make my decision was just overall how good the school’s football reputation is and the benefits for me when I am there playing and the life after football,” Ward said. “It’s a great opportunity for me while knowing I will have the opportunity to come in and play early and help the team.”

Ward said picking Army over Navy came down, “to the coaching staff really and how the coaches from Army were trying to get me down to West Point immediately after I picked up the offer.”

Ward was active in the secondary his junior season, recording 52 tackles, picking off four passes, forcing three fumbles and recovering two fumbles for Clear Springs High.

The 6-foot, 170-pound Ward brings defensive flexibility to Army’s 2026 recruiting class.

”I think my talents match up well because I can go outside and play one-on-one with the wide receiver or I can play back deep at the safety spot. My talents give me the ability to be able to play anywhere in the secondary.”
