Recruiting: LB Joseph Harper makes commitment to Army, mission

Joseph Harper’s football future might be on hold but the Northwood (Calif.) linebacker sees a promising opportunity with Army.

Harper is embarking on a mission through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints right after he graduates high school this spring.

The linebacker’s football talents attracted offers from both Army and Navy. Harper said recruiting coach Sean Saturnio and Army gave him the chance to play following his mission. Navy wouldn’t let Harper play football when he returned, he said.

Harper will be a member of Army’s 2027 class following his commitment to the Black Knights Thursday (Jan.30).

“I’m super grateful that Army is giving me that opportunity” Harper said.

Army started recruiting Harper after his senior season. Harper earned league MVP and second-team, all-Orange County honors. He closely followed Army’s 12-2 2024 season.

”I love the toughness and class that Army has always played with,” said Harper, who officially committed to Army on January 30. “Academic-wide, I heard it’s very tough and challenging but that will only build great leaders. And for me I’m a big history guy, to go somewhere where American heroes attended is truly something special.”

Harper also believes Army gives him a chance to grow as a player.

“With all the transfer-portal chaos, Army is truly a football program that develops their players from the ground up,” Harper said.

Harper, who has five siblings, is a three-sport athlete, a small forward in basketball and left fielder in baseball.
