Army sprint football’s comeback attempt was thwarted by Navy in overtime.

Navy’s Jacori Sutton kicked a 34-yard field goal in the first overtime for a 20-17 victory over Army, clinching the championship of the Collegiate Sprint Football League.

Both teams entered the game, played at Shea Stadium at West Point and the last of the regular season, undefeated at 7-0. With the victory the Midshipmen’s claimed their fourth CSFL title in five years and 41st overall championship. Army won the title last year, defeating Navy, 21-16 in Annapolis. Army has won the sprint football championship 37 times.

Navy took a 17-7 lead early in the fourth quarter. But sophomore Nick Cueto hit a 24-yard field goal midway through the quarter to close the gap to 17-10. Army then forced overtime when the Black Knights’ junior quarterback Kyle West raced to the left corner of the end zone with 2:13 left in the game on a fourth-and-two play and Cueto converted the extra point to knot the game at 17-17.

With Navy winning the toss in overtime and opting to take the ball second, the Black Knights were stopped on three straight plays forcing a 45-yard field goal attempt by Cueto that was short.

Navy jumped out to 14-0 lead before West found Marek Arbogast for a 37-yard touchdown midway through the second quarter.
