Recruiting: Texas TE Wayne Kelly sees bright future with Army

Wayne Kelly’s experience at tight end might be limited but the Randle (Texas) Army commit believes he can become an impact player with the Black Knights.

Kelly, who committed to Army on Feb. 2 one day after his West Point weekend visit, exclusively played defensive end his senior season. Army coaches view Kelly’s height (6-foot-7) and athleticism as a good fit on the offensive side.

“I haven’t had much experience at that position but I know for sure my hands are second to none and I will execute on getting better,” Kelly said. “I will play any position as long as I’m on out the field.”

Army has generally utilized tight ends as blockers during Jeff Monken’s 11 seasons. Some recruited tight ends have transitioned to the offensive line during their time at West Point, including recent Super Bowl champion Brett Toth of the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kelly’s official visit, his first to West Point, was a difference maker in his decision. Kelly helped Randle to a 16-0 record and a Texas 5A Division II state title his senior season.

“What really (connected) with me was their brotherhood,” Kelly said. “They have great team chemistry and an amazing coaching staff. I know everyone there will help me grow and become better for my future goals.’

Kelly spoke with former Army running back AJ Howard about the West Point experience before making his commitment.

“He told me that they were going to find my weaknesses and use them against me to make me stronger,” said Kelly, who also plays basketball and baseball.

Kelly is up for the challenge.
