Army women’s basketball survived and advanced in the first round of the WNIT with an incredible late surge to keep its season alive.

Fiona Hastick’s layup and free throw capped a 21-point comeback in Army’s 59-58 win over host Bryant.

Army (25-7) captured the program’s first Division I postseason (non-Patriot League tournament) win.

”What a team, what a fight,” Army coach Missy Traversi said on Army radio. “My heart is through the roof. What a time, what a fight.”

Hastick paced the Black Knights with a season-high 22 points. The sophomore forward gave Army its first lead since early in the first quarter on the old-fashioned 3-pointer with 48.4 seconds left.

Next up for Army is a second-round road game at Rutgers at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Traversi said going to a smaller lineup keyed Army’s comeback with Hastick as its tallest player at 5-foot-11. The Black Knights finished the game on a 33-11 run.

Soleil Montrose scored 12 points off the bench and Trinity Hardy, Army’s only senior, added 10 points.
