Army DB Larry Pickett rescues man from car fire

The life of Army football players is different than most of their peers.

Larry Pickett is training to lead troops as a second lieutenant upon graduation from West Point. The selfless service goes beyond the football field. Pickett experienced that Saturday night when he and his family came across a man whose vehicle hit a telephone pole on 9W Saturday night in Fort Montgomery.

Pickett and his father, Larry Sr., reacted quickly, getting the man out of car, which was about to catch fire and carry himself across the highway to safety with power lines down on the road.

”I’m just grateful that we got him out, honestly,” Pickett said on the scene. “When we pulled off there was somebody standing there and they saw the electric wire, I don’t think they wanted to get him. That could have went totally different for him. I’m just thankful honestly.”

“This is more than a display of leadership,” Larry Sr. said. “It’s a testament to the character West Point is building in him – a readiness to go into the line of fire, not just for his country, but for anyone who needs it. To see that courage and selflessness in action firsthand was truly incredible.”

Pickett made his college debut for Army Friday njght, making a tackle covering kicks for the Black Knights.

His act is worthy of the Soldiers Medal, given for bravery and courage in a non-combat scenario.
