Army offensive line coach and former West Point football captain Mike Viti will reportedly be the next tight end coach at Miami (Fla.) University.

Viti’s pending departure was first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel. The former Army fullback has spent the last 11 years on staff. Viti has mentored Army’s offensive line the previous four seasons. Army won the Joe Moore Award in 2024 as the nation’s best offensive line aftunder Viti and current Central Michigan head coach Matt Drinkall.

Viti was the only former Army player on the coaching staff. He earned four varsity letters (2004-07) and caught 30 passes for 198 yards, both tops for Army fullbacks since 2000. Viti was a platoon leader during Operation Enduring Freedom, earning a Bronze Star.

Many West Point graduates and former Army football players believed Viti was in line to be the academy’s next head coach if Jeff Monken were to leave for another program.

Now, Viti gets his chance to coach at one of country’s top programs. Miami reached the national championship game as the 10th seed under Mario Cristobal in January.

Army has another opening on its staff before spring practice begins Friday. Defensive line coach Allen Smith is leaving West Point to become the Philadelphia Eagles assistant outside linebackers coach. Smith’s hiring was first reported by Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports.

Smith departs after one season at West Point and was instrumental in the development of sophomore defensive end Jack Bousum, who earned American Conference third-team honors in his first year as a starter.
