Skylar Hamilton’s knowledge of Army football was limited before recruiting.
As Army entered the process with an offer, Hamilton started to realize his future calling may be more than just the game.
Hamilton’s recent West Point visit made that much clearer.
“Honestly what drew me there (to Army) is the coaching and brotherhood and also not only being developed as a football player but also a man,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton committed to Army Sunday. The Landmark Christian (Ga.) quarterback will sign his certificate of commitment today.
“Army was the main one (school) pushing for me,” Hamilton said. “I had some other schools recruiting me (Navy being one) but none really came after me like West Point.”
Hamilton played just about every skilled position possible from running back to defensive back before settling in at quarterback in eighth grade.
Playing quarterback is in Hamilton’s DNA. His father, Joe, won the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s best signal caller in 1999. Joe Hamilton was a two-time, ACC first-team selection for Georgia Tech and the conference’s player of the year in 1999.
“My dad has been beyond beneficial to my growth,” Hamilton said. “It’s like having a coach at your house at all times.”
Hamilton produced some impressive numbers, earning his third straight Landmark team MVP honor. The 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior passed for 2,232 yards and 30 touchdowns and rushed for 901 yards and 13 scores.
The dual-threat quarterback is ready to learn Army’s option-style offense.
”I personally feel confident in my abilities and that I can translate to any scheme,” Hamilton said. “At Landmark, we tried to keep the ball in my hands as much as possible and I believe that I can produce the same way at Army.”
