There was a lot of scoring in the American Conference last weekend.
South Florida and North Texas combined for 99 points in the Bulls 63-36 victory over the previously-undefeated Mean Green. UTSA defeated in-state rival Rice, 61-13 and Florida Atlantic knocked off UAB 53-33.
Navy senior quarterback Blake Horvath was named the league’s offensive player of the week. Horvath accounted for 296 yards of total offense and three touchdowns with no turnovers and came up with the winning plays in the fourth quarter of a 32-31 win at Temple. Horvath finished with 155 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries and added 141 yards and a touchdown pass.
Jhalyn Shuler, a fifth-year linebacker for South Florida was the defensive player of the week. Shuyler finished with eight tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry and was part of two key turnovers in South Florida’s 63-36 win North Texas. Shuler had a 31-yard interception return and contributed to the scoring with a 34-yard fumble return for a touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Bulls a 42-21 lead.
Redshirt freshman Patrick Durkin was the special teams player of the week. Durkin supplied all of Tulane’s scoring in the first half and finished with 14 points in the Green Wave’s 26-19 win against East Carolina. Durkin is one of four NCAA FBS kickers who is perfect on at least 10 field goal attempts this season (13-of-13).
Here is a look at how Army’s 2025 opponents fared last week:
Tarleton State (7-0) – The third-ranked (FCS level) Texans won for the seventh time in a row, knocking off host Utah Tech Trailblazers, 41-23. Daniel Greek threw for 169 yards on 13 completions. He had one interception for Tarleton State. James Paige scored four touchdowns, racing for 114 yards on 30 carries for the Texans. Up Next: West Georgia.
Kansas State (3-4) – The Wildcats got back on the winning side of the ledger, knocking off TCU, 41-28. Avery Johnson completed 16 of 26 passes for 198 yards and three touchdowns for Kansas State. Joe Jackson ran for 110 yards on 27 carries while Garrett Oakley caught four passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns for the Wildcats. Up Next: Bye.
North Texas (5-1, 1-1 in the American) – The Mean Green were outscored, 42-15 in the second half by South Florida on Friday night, en route to a 63-36 loss to the Bulls. Drew Mestemaker completed 30 of 48 passes for 326 yards and two touchdowns for North Texas. He also threw three interceptions. Up Next: UTSA.
East Carolina (3-3, 1-1 in the American) – The Pirates were outscored 14-3 in the fourth quarter on Thursday night and lost to Tulane, 26-19. Katin Houser threw for 180 yards and a touchdown for East Carolina. Up Next: Tulsa (Thursday night).
UAB (2-4, 0-3 in the American) – The Dragons were outclassed by Florida Atlantic, 53-33, and coach Trent Dilfer was fired on Sunday. Up Next: Memphis.
Charlotte (1-5, 0-3 in the American) – Army held the 49ers scoreless until the last eight seconds of the game on the way to a 24-7 victory. Charlotte’s two quarterbacks could only manage 110 passing yards. Up Next: Temple.
Tulane (5-1, 2-0 in the American) – Jake Retzlaff threw for 347 yards on 26 completions and had two touchdown passes in a 26-19 win over East Carolina. Kicker Patrick Durkin converted four field goals of 30, 29, 21 and 40 yards for the Green Wave. Up Next: Army.
Air Force (1-5) – The Falcons had a chance to knock off undefeated UNLV but the Rebels scored a late touchdown and Air Force missed a field goal to force overtime in UNLV’s 50-47 victory. Liam Szarka passed for 175 yards and a touchdown for Air Force. Owen Allen rushed for 192 yards on 17 carries and had two rushing touchdowns. Up Next: Wyoming.
Temple (3-3, 1-1 in the American) – Evan Simon was up to his old tricks again, this time throwing for 345 yards and a touchdown, plus running for a score for the Owls. But a late Navy touchdown in the final minute of regulation and a successful two-point conversion gave the Midshipmen a 32-21 victory. Kajiya Hollswayne caught nine passes for 146 yards for Temple. Tulsa (2-4, 0-3 in the American) – The Golden Hurricane were off last weekend. Up Next: at East Carolina (Thursday night).
UTSA (3-3, 1-1 in the American) – Owen McCown completed 15 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns in the Roadrunners 61-13 victory over Rice. Will Henderson ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries and Shad Banks had six tackles for UTSA. Up Next: At North Texas.
Navy (6-0, 4-0 in the American) – Navy trailed Temple by 10 points in the fourth quarter but Horvath led the Midshipmen back as they knocked off the Owls, 32-31. Horvath raced for a 51-yard score with 39 seconds left in regulation to close the Temple lead to one. He then threw a pass to successfully complete a two-point conversion to give Navy the win and move them to 6-0 overall and 4-0 in the American. Up Next: Bye.
