Tyrell Robinson announces he’s entering transfer portal

Army sophomore slotback Tyrell Robinson has decided to enter the transfer portal, he announced Friday morning.

Robinson, a game-breaker in the Black Knights’ rushing and passing game, was second on the team in rushing and receiving in 2021.

“This past season has been incredible and the love I have for my teammates, the Army football staff and the Army fans is unmatched by words,” Robinson posted on Twitter. “I appreciate the support and the love that everyone has showed me and I would like to say thank you with all of my heart.”

“Thank you to my family for the support and advice that they have given me while making this tough decision. Furthermore, through a lot of conversations and thought, I have made the decision to enter the transfer portal with 3 years of eligibility.”

Robinson’s announcement comes one day after top receiver Isaiah Alston declared that he was entering the transfer portal. Robinson averaged 8.5 yards per carry and rushed for 609 yards and three touchdowns. He also caught 12 passes for 340 yards (28.3 yard average) and three touchdowns and was Army’s primary punt returner.

Robinson was one of the most electric running backs to play on the banks of the Hudson in any era of the program’s storied history. All of Robinson’s six touchdowns were 24 yards or more including three of 70 yards or more.

    Can’t blame them with the potential payday they will get both in NIL and possibly the pro’s. Good luck to both. They were fun to watch.

    Too, too bad. What a bummer the transfer portal is for Coach Monken (and all coaches), trying to build a long range program, after all the recruiting and coaching/development time and money and effort spent by the Army coaches, and the taxpayer/federal funds, and the supporters’ and fans’ money spent in support of Coach Monken’s efforts. Something has to be done about this transfer portal. And please clarify for me Sal if it’s true that a guy who already played two full seasons like Robinson still has 3 years of eligibility because of the transfer portal. If that is true, I would think most guys who struggle with academics or something else would want to have a 5 year college career in football and 5 years to get their degree. In my opinion, it’s ruining college sports. In my opinion, college may need a third Division I section besides FBS and BCS that has true scholar-athletes instead of make-believe college students. Call it FSS (Football Scholar Section)?

    @Norm
    Traditionally, a student-athlete has 5 years to play 4 years of their sport. Due to the 2020-2021 year being affected by COVID, NCAA student-athletes can compete in all or a portion of the 2020-21 season, but it won’t be counted against their years of eligibility depending on their division level specific eligibility rules. An extra year means a current college student-athlete would have 6 years to play their 4 years.

    With regards to your comment about 5 years of football or 5 years to get your degree. Folks already doing that by red-shirting a year.

    Was it Covid that allowed all D-1 players another year of eligibility?

    It used to be 5 years to play 4 seasons, but perhaps Covid considerations bumped it up.

    WE can say “oh well it is just part of the normal attrition amongst Army West Point football players”, but the question as to whether they are recruiting young men who are seeking to become Army Officers who will lead our nation’s soldiers or young men who are seeking a football opportunity” must be asked. Both these fine young men were lightly recruited by FBS schools, both spent a year at the USMA Prep School to prepare them for USMA and both spent about 18 months at USMA . Now after 2 1/2 years of schooling at taxpayer expense they enter the NCAA football transfer portal in order to find what they see as a better deal and with no consequences. In fact if they can get a waiver, which is easy to do , they can play for another school in Fall 2022. USMA is not a football school or a prep school for other football programs and it should not be used as one. It the nation’s military academy. If cadet who plays football wants to leave, he should do the honorable thing and simply resign as any cadet would do , and then go find his next opportunity . Football players are cadets – not scholarship atheltes . Using the NCAA portal to figure out whether you are leaving or not is the wrong thing for all military academy cadet/midshipmen athletes to do . It is very disappointing to see these two fine young men step into the NCAA football transfer portal. Have they been recruited? Something must be done about this and soon.

    This is a sad day for the USMA program what fearless 6 said is totally true and I was thinking that who’s joining the military academy whenever it’s Army Black Knights or Air Force or Navy should honor their commitment as these are not like other schools as you are joining to protect the country and should be treated as such 🇺🇸

    The very reason for the long-standing NCAA rule of losing a year of eligibility if you transfer was to discourage the chaos in college athletics caused by people jumping around from college to college. That worked fairly well, but not in all cases. Many college coaches, like the coach of Colorado, are livid about the chaos caused by the new transfer portal rules. The NCAA can discourage most of the chaos by simply immediately reverting back to the previous rule of losing a year. It can almost completely shut down the problem by mandating a loss of TWO years of eligibility, if the “powers that be” are sincere about solving the problem. As to Covid, they should only allow athletes to play the additional season if they remain at the present college. Come on “powers that be”, it’s not that hard.
