Recruiting: Texas OL Byron Abner picks Army

Byron Abner received the college football offer that he was wanting and the South Oak Cliff (Dallas, Texas) offensive lineman couldn’t pass it up.

After receiving initial interest from Army assistant Justin “Juice” Weaver in May, Abner was offered by the linebackers coach Friday. Abner called Weaver with his commitment to the Black Knights Sunday afternoon.

“I heard the benefits and connections of graduating from West Point are amazing,” Abner said. “I see that guys from here graduate and get to the league. It just seemed like a great fit for me.

“I was waiting for the offer since the first conversation with Coach Juice. I was just ready to commit.”

Abner, who is 6-foot-2 and 290 pounds, started at center and guard for the 2023 Texas state finalist. South Oak Cliff has a 41-7 record in Abner’s first three years of high school. Abner’s Class of 2025 teammates have committed to Arkansas and Stanford.

Army is recruiting Abner to play along the offensive line. Abner says he plays in “an aggressive and fast way, making adjustments as the game happens.” He plans on taking an unofficial visit to West Point on June 26th.
