Miles Stewart racing to end zone in new Army offense

Vision. Speed. Winning one-on-one matchups.

Miles Stewart describes his long touchdown run at the end of Army’s scrimmage Saturday.

Army’s offensive line “covered up” the defense’s front seven allowing the sophomore running back to bounce outside. Slot receiver Noah Short’s punishing block cleared a path, leaving Stewart a race to the end zone.

“It was me and the corner (back) and I just felt like I could outrun him,” Stewart said. “With it all blocked that way, it was my one-on-one battle and I just had to outrun him to get to the edge and run the 200 (meter dash) like coach says.”

Stewart said there’s a comfortability with the new offense this spring. It brings Stewart back to his days at Lusher (La.) Charter School. Stewart rushed for more 2,500 yards combined in his last two high school seasons.

“The way we played in high school definitely translates to running the zone here,” said Stewart, whose game-breaking speed was put on notice at Army Prep, where he had multiple kick/punt return touchdowns. “I think it’s a great fit for coach (Drew) Thatcher’s offense.

“The familiarity and the situations you get put in is more one-on-one or nitty-gritty yards.”

Stewart’s run could be a sign of things to come for the Black Knights’ new shotgun offense. Stewart can see a bright future for the scheme that was changed from Army’s traditional triple-option base.

“I think it’s (the offense’s potential) is high as long as we just execute and keep being physical,” Stewart said. “I think we can’t get too flashy, We, as players, have to hold ourselves accountable and know that we are blocking for each other and we are playing for each other. As long as we always keep that as the main thing, I think we are going to do great things and score a lot of points.”

Would expect Stewart to have an increased role as a single back this fall. Stewart earned a spot in the Black Knights’ slotback rotation last season, carrying the ball six times for 29 yards in nine games last season. He recovered a blocked punt for touchdown in a win over UConn.

I have not seen any videos of the scrimmages this spring. Do you have any, such as Stewart’s long TD discussed in interview?
