Army is switching to a co-offensive coordinator dynamic with a current member and newcomer to its coaching staff.

Tight ends coach Matt Drinkall will be Army’s co-offensive coordinator. Nebraska-Kearney offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Drew Thatcher will call the plays in his designed system, Black Knight Nation has learned.

The system could make for a shifting in Army’s scheme though Thatcher’s offense rushed for a Nebraska-Kearney record of 4,116 yards in his first season in 2019.

Nebraska-Kearney averaged 450 rushing yards per game in 2021 under Thatcher. The Division II school scored 32.8 points per game this season.

Drinkall has worked closely with the offensive line on blocking schemes as Army’s tight end coach for the past three seasons,. He spent his first year at West Point as an offensive quality control coach, mentoring quarterbacks, in 2019.

Drinkall had record-breaking success running a power spread scheme at Kansas Wesleyan, where he was head coach and offensive coordinator prior to joining Army’s staff. Kansas Wesleyan amassed 89 points in a game, 69 in a half and 49 in one quarter in one season under Drinkall.

Drinkall is also a big proponent of featuring fullbacks. He’s a respected, creative offensive mind. Drinkall has presented spread schemes at coaching clinics and seminars.

Thatcher will take over the play-calling duties following the news Sunday that Brent Davis would no longer be Army’s offensive coordinator after nine seasons. Thatcher worked with former Ole Miss quarterback Jordan Ta’amu at New Mexico Military Institute prior to Nebraska Kearney. Ta’amu was on the practice squad of Chiefs, Lions, Panthers and Commanders and led the USFL in passing touchdowns for the Tampa Bay Bandits in 2022.

Sal, Did Coach Monken can Davis? How did this come about? Whose idea to have co-coordinators? Are we keeping but just adding passing to the option system, since that is Monken’s forte? Please try to find out. They should give YOU an exclusive interview with Coach Monken.
