Brent Davis out as OC, slotbacks RB coach Jason Nichols not returning

Army will have a new offensive play caller for the first time in nearly a decade.

Black Knight Nation has learned that Brent Davis will not be the team’s offensive coordinator after nine seasons at West Point. Slotbacks coach Jason Nichols will also not be retained after one season, Black Knight Nation has learned.

Army had one of the nation’s top rushing offenses (yards per game) under Davis, who was also Monken’s offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern before Army. But, Army’s recent struggles against service academies Navy and Air Force are well-documented.

The Black Knights managed only 153 total yards (125 rushing yards, 2.6 yards average) in a double-overtime win over Navy and 78 rushing yards in a 13-7 loss to Air Force this season.

Army’s offense scored just four touchdowns (one in overtime this season) in its last four games against Navy. The Black Knights scored 51 points over the last four games vs. Air Force.

Davis helped make Georgia one of Army’s most successful recruiting states during his time at Army. Safety Rhyan England, linebacker Kenneth Brinson, slotbacks Kell Walker and Tyrell Robinson and defensive end Kwabena Bonsu are among the Army standouts from the Peach state.

Davis, who was also Army’s offensive line coach for nine seasons, played an important role in the change to a winning culture at Army. Army’s offensive line was nicknamed “The M.O.B. (Malicious Offensive Line Brotherhood)” and at the forefront of team’s change.

Army could look to its current staff for the next offensive coordinator. Tight ends coach Matt Drinkall was head coach at Kansas Wesleyan prior to Army. Quarterbacks coach Cody Worley was Army’s offensive coordinator for the 2020 Liberty Bowl.

Brent Davis is a good man, but methinks Army HC is looking for a somewhat new offensive strategy and he will bring surprise everyone with his OC choice to implement it.

Was Davis fired? I thought we needed a passing game co-offensive coordinator WITH Davis to synergise a passing option with Davis’ successful ground option, thus doing something creative and unique in college football —- which would be a tribute to Jeff Monken. Maybe this is the right way to go, but I hope we don’t abandon the option that brought Army from 0-11 to beating Missouri, scoring 72 against Houston in that Bowl, tying Oklahoma, tying Michigan, etc. Davis did, and is capable of doing, many good things. He just needed some help to beat the loading-the-box defense against our successful option game.
